Statista PROMs implementation survey

To account for the increasing importance of value-based care in healthcare systems worldwide, Statista is surveying hospitals regarding their Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) implementation status. PROMs are defined as standardized, validated questionnaires completed by patients to measure their perception of their functional well-being and quality of life related to an episode or experience of care.

Newsweek and Statista recognize the importance of this topic for global advancements in healthcare delivery and, together with the guidance of Statista’s global board of medical experts, have developed a survey about the implementation and use of PROMs across different specialties and departments in hospitals. The implementation of PROMs adds a patient-outcome focused dimension and improves the comprehensiveness of the rankings.

The current survey period for the PROMs implementation survey is open from September 18, 2024 to November 15, 2024. You can view the survey here. The responses from the survey will be taken into account for all hospital rankings in 2025.

Project Details

About the project

The 5th edition of America’s Best Addiction Treatment Centers ranking awards the leading 400 addiction treatment centers in the U.S., providing patients with a comprehensive resource for informed decision-making regarding the best sites. The list included facilities in the 25 states with the highest number of addiction treatment centers, according to Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The remaining states were grouped into four regions lists. The lists are based on three data sources: A national online survey among peers, accreditation data on addiction treatment centers provided by SAMSHA and Google Reviews.

Scoring

For the scoring analysis, three data sources were evaluated to identify leading addiction treatment centers.
The first source, the National Online Survey by Statista R, medical professionals working in addiction treatment centers were invited to recommend and rate leading facilities in their respective U.S. states.
The second data source included in the scoring analysis was accreditation data on addiction treatment centers provided by SAMHSA.
The third data source was the Google Reviews included as a measure of patient experience.
Only inpatient/residential and long-term addiction treatment centers were included in the ranking. Long-term programs required a minimum residency of 30 days, although in a few selected cases, a minimum residency of 28 days was accepted. Facilities that only offer outpatient or short-term addiction treatment services were excluded.

Data collection

From April to May 2024, Newsweek and Statista invited thousands of medical professionals (therapists, counselors, medical doctors) and managers/administrators working in addiction treatment facilities to an online survey. Participants were asked to recommend and subsequently rate notable addiction treatment centers. The professional experience of the participant was taken into account. Recommendations for own employer were not allowed.

For each recommended center, participants rated four quality dimensions on a scale from 1 (“Poor”) to 10 (“Excellent”): Quality of care, Quality of follow-up care, Quality of service, and Accommodation & amenities. Each facility received a quality score based on the weighted average of these dimensions.

Evaluation

The evaluation of addiction treatment centers utilized a comprehensive scoring model comprising three pillars: Reputation Score (65%), Accreditation Score (30%), and Google Review Score (5%).

The Reputation Score was calculated based on the medical professionals’ recommendations (85%) and an assessment of quality dimensions (15%).

The Accreditation Score incorporated data from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) regarding the available accreditations for addiction treatment centers.

The Google Reviews were incorporated as a measure of patient experience.
