Statista PROMs implementation survey
To account for the increasing importance of value-based care in healthcare systems worldwide, Statista is surveying hospitals regarding their Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) implementation status. PROMs are defined as standardized, validated questionnaires completed by patients to measure their perception of their functional well-being and quality of life related to an episode or experience of care.
Newsweek and Statista recognize the importance of this topic for global advancements in healthcare delivery and, together with the guidance of Statista’s global board of medical experts, have developed a survey about the implementation and use of PROMs across different specialties and departments in hospitals. The implementation of PROMs adds a patient-outcome focused dimension and improves the comprehensiveness of the rankings.
The current survey period for the PROMs implementation survey is open from September 18, 2024 to November 29, 2024. You can view the survey here. The responses from the survey will be taken into account for all hospital rankings in 2025.

How we work
Scoring
The scoring model is based on 4 pillars: Hospital recommendations from medical experts, hospital quality metrics, patient experience data and the voluntary PROMs implementation survey.
Concept
For the list of America’s Best Cancer Hospitals the following was taken into consideration:
(1) From April to May 2024, Statista invited hospital managers and medical professionals with knowledge about cancer hospitals to an online survey. The survey was available to medical professionals to participate on Newsweek.com. Additionally, participants were invited via e-mail. Participants were asked to recommend cancer hospitals and to rate them in the areas of: social work program / supportive care services, psycho-oncological / psychosocial support, outpatient & inpatient palliative care, multidisciplinary care teams, cancer rehabilitation programs, patient education & counseling, clinical trials & research. Furthermore, participants could recommend the hospital for notable cancer treatments. Recommendations for own employer were not allowed.
(2) Hospital quality metrics data relevant to cancer care from Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), the American Hospital Association annual hospital survey of 2022, The Joint Commission (TJC), and Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT) were collected.
(3) Publicly available data from patient surveys was used to analyze the overall patient experience in the hospital.
(4) Additionally, data collected from hospitals from the PROMs Implementation survey were factored in to scorings.
Data collection
Medical experts were invited by Statista and Newsweek to participate in an online survey to recommend hospitals on a national level. Recommendations for own employer were not allowed.
Evaluation
For the evaluation, Statista R applies a scoring model. The scores were calculated for each hospital in each of the 4 categories and weighted accordingly: Peers recommendations (40%), hospital quality metrics (41.5%), patient experience (15%) and PROMs (3.5%).
Hospitals that received a 1 star rating from CMS were not eligible for the ranking.
