Statista PROMs implementation survey

To account for the increasing importance of value-based care in healthcare systems worldwide, Statista is surveying hospitals regarding their Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) implementation status. PROMs are defined as standardized, validated questionnaires completed by patients to measure their perception of their functional well-being and quality of life related to an episode or experience of care.

Newsweek and Statista recognize the importance of this topic for global advancements in health care delivery and, together with the guidance of Statista’s global board of medical experts, have developed a survey about the implementation and use of PROMs across different specialties and departments in hospitals. The implementation of PROMs adds a patient-outcome focused dimension and improves the comprehensiveness of the rankings.

Only hospitals which achieved a minimum of 50% (of the maximum 100% score) were eligible to be graded and received a maximum of up to 3.5% towards the total score.

The upcoming survey period for the PROMs implementation survey will begin in autumn 2024 and will be open for participation here.

About the project

The ranking for America’s Best Children’s Hospitals 2024 is based on a national online survey of thousands medical professionals as well as hospital quality metrics, results from patient experience surveys, and a PROMs implementation score based on the voluntary Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) implementation survey conducted by Statista. The ranking features the top 50 hospitals for Cardiology & Cardiac Surgery, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology & Gastrointestinal Surgery, Neonatology, Oncology & Hematology, Pulmonology & Thoracic Surgery, and Neurology & Neurosurgery and the top 30 for Orthopedics. Hospitals specializing in multiple specialties received specific recommendation scores for each respective medical field. Therefore, one hospital can be represented in more than one list if it receives enough recommendations in each specialty. The upcoming survey period for the PROMs implementation survey will begin in autumn 2024 and will be open for participation here.

How we work

Group 1161

Scoring

The scoring model is based on 4 pillars: Hospital recommendations from medical experts, hospital quality metrics, patient experience data and the voluntary PROMs implementation survey.

Group 1162

Concept

Participants were asked to recommend hospitals based on their expertise in a subspecialty they were most familiar with and were able to choose an optional second subspecialty in which they are also knowledgeable (e.g. due to frequent cooperation with other medical fields).

(1) From April to May 2024, Statista invited hospital managers and medical professionals with knowledge about children’s hospitals to an online survey. The survey was available to medical professionals to participate on Newsweek.com. Additionally, participants were invited via e-mail. Participants were asked to recommend hospitals in a subspecialty they were most familiar with and to recommend hospitals in a second subspecialty. Recommendations for own employer were not allowed.

(2) Hospital quality metrics data relevant to pediatric care from Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), the American Hospital Association annual hospital survey of 2022, and The Joint Commission (TJC) were collected.

(3) Publicly available data from patient surveys was used to analyze the overall patient experience in the hospital.

(4) Additionally, data collected from hospitals from the PROMs Implementation survey were factored into the scorings.

Data collection

Medical experts were invited by Statista and Newsweek to participate in an online survey to recommend hospitals on a national level. Recommendations for own employer were not allowed.

Group 1157

Evaluation

For the evaluation, Statista R applies a scoring model. Scores were calculated for each hospital in each of the four categories and weighted accordingly: Peers recommendations (51.5%, consisting of 70% recommendations from peers for primary subspecialty and 30% recommendations from peers for secondary subspecialty), hospital quality metrics (30%, consisting on 30% CMS data, 5% accreditations/certifications, and 65% the AHA data), patient experience (15%) and PROMs (3.5%).
