Statista PROMs implementation survey

To account for the increasing importance of value-based care in healthcare systems worldwide, Statista is surveying hospitals regarding their Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) implementation status. PROMs are defined as standardized, validated questionnaires completed by patients to measure their perception of their functional well-being and quality of life related to an episode or experience of care.

Newsweek and Statista recognize the importance of this topic for global advancements in healthcare delivery and, together with the guidance of Statista’s global board of medical experts, have developed a survey about the implementation and use of PROMs across different specialties and departments in hospitals. The implementation of PROMs adds a patient-outcome focused dimension and improves the comprehensiveness of the rankings.

The upcoming survey period for the PROMs implementation survey will begin in autumn 2025 and will be open for participation here.

Project Details

About the project

The ranking for America’s Best Children’s Hospitals 2025 is based on a national online survey of over ten thousand medical professionals as well as hospital quality metrics, patient satisfaction data based on Google reviews, and a PROMs implementation score based on the voluntary Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) implementation survey conducted by Statista. The ranking features the top 50 hospitals for Cardiology & Cardiac Surgery, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology & Gastrointestinal Surgery, Neonatology, Neurology and Neurosurgery, Oncology, Orthopedics and Pulmonology. Hospitals specializing in multiple specialties received specific recommendation scores for each respective medical field. Therefore, one hospital can be represented in more than one list if it receives enough recommendations in each specialty. The upcoming survey period for the PROMs implementation survey will begin in autumn 2025 and will be open for participation here.

How we work

Group 1161

Concept

For the lists the following data sources were taken into consideration:

(1) From February to March 2025, Statista invited over ten thousand hospital managers and medical professionals with knowledge about children’s hospitals to an online survey. The survey was available to medical professionals to participate on newsweek.com. Additionally, participants were invited via e-mail. Participants were asked to recommend hospitals in a subspecialty they were most familiar with and to recommend hospitals in a second subspecialty. Recommendations for own employer were not allowed.

(2) Hospital quality metrics data relevant to pediatric care from accreditations and certifications, the American Hospital Association annual hospital survey of 2022, Medicare Fee-for-Service claims sourced from Arcadia, and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) were collected.

  • General & specialty-centric accreditations/certifications (e.g., The Joint Commission (TJC), Det Norske Veritas (DNV))
  • American Hospital Association (AHA) Annual Survey Database 2022
  • Medicare Fee-for-Service claims benchmark data sourced from Arcadia
  • Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS)

(3) Evaluations from Google were researched for each children’s hospital as a proxy for patient satisfaction within the hospital.

(4) Additionally, data collected from hospitals from the PROMs Implementation survey were factored into the scorings.

Data collection

Medical experts were invited by Statista and Newsweek to participate in an online survey to recommend hospitals on a national level. Recommendations for own employer were not allowed.

Evaluation

For the evaluation, Statista R applies a scoring model. Scores were calculated for each hospital in each of the four categories and weighted accordingly: Hospital recommendation from peers (45%, consisting of 60% recommendations from peers for primary subspecialty and 40% recommendations from peers for secondary subspecialty), hospital quality metrics (42.5%, consisting of 40% accreditations and certifications, 40% AHA data, 10% Arcadia data, and 10% CMS data), patient satisfaction (7.5%) and PROMs (5%). Hospitals with a very small number of beds were not considered in the ranking.

For the PROMs pillar: only hospitals which achieved a minimum of 50% (of the maximum 100% score) were eligible to be graded and received a maximum of up to 5% towards the total score.

Quality assurance

Disclaimer: The rankings are comprised exclusively of hospitals that are eligible regarding the scope described in this document. A mention in the ranking is a positive recognition based on peer recommendations and publicly available data sources at the time. The ranking is the result of an elaborate process which, due to the interval of data collection and analysis, is a reflection of the last calendar year. Furthermore, events preceding or following the period 04/23/2024–04/22/2025 and/or pertaining to individual persons affiliated/associated to the facilities were not included in the metrics. As such, the results of this ranking should not be used as the sole source of information for future deliberations.

The information provided in this ranking should be considered in conjunction with other available information about hospitals or, if possible, accompanied by a visit to a facility. The quality of hospitals that are not included in the rankings is not disputed.
