Concept

The ranking for America‘s Best Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRCs) aims to provide a comprehensive resource for informed decision making regarding the best CCRCs in the US. CCRCs, also known as Life Plan Communities, are facilities that offer a continuum of long-term care options, allowing residents to access higher-level care when medical needs progress. The communities typically include Independent Living, Assisted Living, Skilled Nursing Care and Memory Care.

The list comprises the top 300 CCRCs in the country, including the 25 states with the highest number of facilities and is based on a scoring model comprising four pillars: CCRC recommendations and ratings from medical professionals and acquaintances of residents and residents living in CCRCs,visitor satisfaction data, accreditation data, and Google reviews.

Data Collection

1. From August to September 2024, Statista and Nesweek conducted a nationwide online survey among medical professionals (e.g., registered nurses, therapists, and physicians) and staff working in the management/administration of CCRCs. Participants were asked to recommend notable CCRCs. Recommendations for own employer/CCRC were not allowed.

2. In the same time period, Statista and Newsweek conducted a nationwide online survey among thousands of acquaintances of residents and residents living in CCRCs. Participants were asked to rate notable CCRCs they have visited in the past three years, or they currently live in, on a scale from 1 (“Would not recommend”) to 10 (“Would strongly recommend”). For each recommended CCRC, participants were asked to rate the following eight quality dimensions on a scale from 1 (“Poor”) to 10 (“Excellent”): Accommodation, commercial services, community services, financial factors, food, overall care, overall safety measures, and overall staffing. The quality dimensions were presented randomly in the survey, and a Quality Dimensions Subscore was assigned based on participant-reported importance.

3. The Visitor Satisfaction Score was included based on data provided by Accushield, LLC. By working with senior living communities around the U.S., Accushield helps facilities with their visitor management to increase safety and reduce vulnerability for seniors across the U.S., as well as to provide and visualize satisfaction data from relatives and acquaintances of people living in senior living communities.

Evaluation

The evaluation of CCRCs was based on a scoring model including four pillars: Reputation Score (70%), consisting of Professional’s Score and Acquaintance’s/Resident’s Score, Visitor Satisfaction Score (15%), Accreditation Score (10%), and Google Reviews Score (5%). The Acquaintance’s/Resident’s Score was calculated based on ratings from acquaintances of residents and residents living in CCRCs (80%) as well as quality dimensions (20%). The Visitor Satisfaction Score was based on data retrieved from Accushield. Facilities without a Visitor Satisfaction Score from Accushield are evaluated based on a scoring model comprising only Reputation Score, Accreditation Score, and Google Reviews Score. The Accreditation Score was based on available CARF accreditations and the Google Reviews Score based on Google Reviews.

Quality Assurance

Please note that all facilities undergo an additional process of quality assurance, to determine if significant events such as insolvency or prolonged financial difficulties occurred.
