About the project

The first edition of America’s Best Fitness & Wellness Retreats 2025 is based on a nationwide online survey of professionals, as well as on evaluation of reputation analysis, website traffic, and client satisfaction. The list highlights the nation’s 100 leading fitness & wellness retreats, which are sorted alphabetically and includes facilities that offer fitness, wellness, and/or nutrition programs, along with recreational activities that support both physical and mental health.

How we work

Concept

The list is based on a scoring model comprising four pillars: fitness & wellness retreat recommendations from peers, reputation analysis, website traffic, and client satisfaction data.

Data collection

The list of America’s Best Fitness & Wellness Retreats 2025 is based on four data sources:

(1) From September to October 2024, Newsweek and Statista conducted a national online survey among professionals with knowledge about fitness & wellness retreats. The survey was promoted on Newsweek.com. Participants were asked to name the leading fitness & wellness retreats in the U.S.
Recommendations for their own employer/retreat were not allowed. Recommendations were weighted based on the order in which they were given, with the first recommendation receiving the highest weight.

(2) Social listening collects and categorizes data about a retreat’s online reputation by tracking social media channels and web sources. Findings reveal the attractiveness of a fitness & wellness retreat based on direct information linked to specific facilities.

Relevant aspects and search terms for fitness & wellness retreats were defined and tested (e.g., fitness, wellness, personal growth, meditation, nutritional coaching).
Over a multiple-month period, news sites, blogs, micro-blogs, and social media networks were tracked comprehensively for these terms.
Identified posts and articles were highlighted and categorized through algorithm-based text analysis as positive, neutral, or negative. This data allows for evaluation of the proportion of positive content.

Additionally, factors such as the total volume of documents per facility, the virality of posts, and their reach (number of linkages, shares, and estimated readership) contributed to the evaluation and the Online Reputation Score.

(3) Website traffic data was analyzed to measure user interest and engagement with each facility.

(4) Client satisfaction: Google reviews were utilized as a proxy measure for customer satisfaction and experience.

Evaluation

For the evaluation, Statista applied a scoring model. Scores were calculated for each hospital in the three categories and weighted accordingly: National online survey of fitness & wellness retreat recommendations from peers (40% of the total score), reputation analysis (25%), website traffic (25%), client satisfaction (10%). Results from scoring model yielded the top 100 list.
