Statista PROMs implementation survey
To account for the increasing importance of value-based care in healthcare systems worldwide, Statista is surveying hospitals regarding their Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) implementation status. PROMs are defined as standardized, validated questionnaires completed by patients to measure their perception of their functional well-being and quality of life related to an episode or experience of care.
Newsweek and Statista recognize the importance of this topic for global advancements in healthcare delivery and, together with the guidance of Statista’s global board of medical experts, have developed a survey about the implementation and use of PROMs across different specialties and departments in hospitals. The implementation of PROMs adds a patient-outcome focused dimension and improves the comprehensiveness of the rankings.
The upcoming survey period for the PROMs implementation survey will begin in autumn 2025 and will be open for participation here.

How we work

Concept
For the lists the following data sources were taken into consideration:
(1) Hospital quality metrics data relevant to the respective medical fields from a variety of sources were collected and analyzed:
- Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS)
- Medicare Fee-for-Service claims benchmark data sourced from Arcadia
- American Hospital Association (AHA) Annual Survey Database 2022
- General & specialty-centric accreditations/certifications (e.g., The Joint Commission (TJC), Det Norske Veritas (DNV))
(2) From February to March 2025, Statista invited tens of thousands of medical professionals (mostly doctors, but also hospital managers and other healthcare professionals) to a nationwide online survey. The survey was also promoted on newsweek.com. Additionally, participants were asked were asked to recommend hospitals in their own field of expertise and to rate them on a scale of 1-10 in different quality dimensions. Furthermore, participants could recommend the hospitals for notable treatments, medical conditions and/or surgeries which the hospitals offer.
(3) Publicly available data from patient surveys was used to analyze the overall patient experience in the hospital
(4) Additionally, data collected from hospitals from the voluntary PROMs implementation survey were factored into the scoring model.

Data collection
Medical experts were invited by Statista and Newsweek to participate in an online survey to recommend hospitals on a national level. Recommendations for own employer were not allowed.

Evaluation
For the evaluation, Statista R applies a scoring model. Scores were calculated for each hospital in each of the four categories and weighted accordingly: Hospital quality metrics (45%), recommendations from peers (35%), , patient experience (15%) and PROMs (5%).
Hospitals that received a 1 star rating from CMS were not eligible for the ranking and hospitals with a very small number of beds were not considered in the ranking.
For the PROMs pillar: only hospitals which achieved a minimum of 50% (of the maximum 100% score) were eligible to be graded and received a maximum of up to 5% towards the total score.

Quality assurance
Use Header Disclaimer: The rankings are comprised exclusively of hospitals that are eligible regarding the scope described in this document. A mention in the ranking is a positive recognition based on peer recommendations and publicly available data sources at the time. The ranking is the result of an elaborate process which, due to the interval of data collection and analysis, is a reflection of the last calendar year. Furthermore, events preceding or following the period 04/23/2024–04/22/2025 and/or pertaining to individual persons affiliated/associated to the facilities were not included in the metrics. As such, the results of this ranking should not be used as the sole source of information for future deliberations.
The information provided in this ranking should be considered in conjunction with other available information about hospitals or, if possible, accompanied by a visit to a facility. The quality of hospitals that are not included in the rankings is not disputed.
