Statista PROMs implementation survey
To account for the increasing importance of value-based care in healthcare systems worldwide, Statista is surveying hospitals regarding their Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) implementation status. PROMs are defined as standardized, validated questionnaires completed by patients to measure their perception of their functional well-being and quality of life related to an episode or experience of care.
Newsweek and Statista recognize the importance of this topic for global advancements in healthcare delivery and, together with the guidance of Statista’s global board of medical experts, have developed a survey about the implementation and use of PROMs across different specialties and departments in hospitals. The implementation of PROMs adds a patient-outcome focused dimension and improves the comprehensiveness of the rankings.
The upcoming survey period for the PROMs implementation survey will begin in autumn 2025 and will be open for participation here.

How we work
Concept
Four key data sources were evaluated to identify the nation’s top hospitals.
Statista R conducted a national online survey of healthcare professionals to collect recommendations on the best hospitals across the U.S.
Quality of care was assessed using metrics from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the AHA Annual Survey of Hospitals Database, and data from leading accreditation bodies. These accreditations included: The Joint Commission Hospital Accreditation, The Joint Commission Sustainable Healthcare Accreditation, The Joint Commission Healthcare Equity Accreditation, the American College of Surgeons, and the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program.
Patient satisfaction was evaluated using data from the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey, provided by CMS. Additionally, Statista conducted a survey on Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) to assess the implementation status of PROMs across hospitals.
Data collection
Between July and August 2024, Statista and Newsweek invited healthcare professionals – including doctors, hospital administrators, and other medical experts – to participate in an online survey. Participants were asked to recommend hospitals within their own state and had the option to recommend hospitals outside their state as well. Recommendations for their own employer were not allowed.
For hospitals within their state, respondents assessed seven key dimensions of care, including the quality of care, accommodation and amenities, staffing, patient education, involvement and decision-making, communication and support from staff, and organization and accessibility. The evaluations were made using a scale from 1 (“Poor”) to 10 (“Excellent”).
Additionally, publicly available data on hospital quality metrics and patient experiences was collected and analyzed.
Evaluation
The evaluation of the hospitals was based on a scoring model encompassing four pillars: Hospital quality metrics score (45%), hospital recommendations from peers (36.5%), patient experience score (15%) and a PROMs implementation score (3.5%).
