About the project

The sixth edition of America’s Best Nursing Homes ranking awards the leading nursing homes in the U.S. based on performance data, peer recommendations, accreditations and resident satisfaction. Nursing homes in the 25 states with the highest number of facilities, according to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (2024) were included in the study. The best 1050 nursing homes are awarded with a rank in their own state, resulting in 25 individual lists for nursing homes with 100 – 149 and over 150 certified beds and 20 individual lists for nursing homes with 50 – 99 beds.

Concept

The evaluation is based on four data sources to identify leading nursing homes.
– Quality Metrics: Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) data were used to determine the performance of nursing homes. This year, the weighting of the performance data pillar was increased within the scoring model to reflect the emphasis on the medical key performance indicators.
National online survey: From June to July 2024, thousands of medical professionals were invited to an online survey in cooperation with Newsweek.
– Accreditation data on nursing homes provided by The Joint Commission (TJC) and Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).
– Google reviews as a proxy for resident satisfaction.
– Only single branches of nursing homes that meet the pre-defined selection criteria were included: A nursing home had to have a capacity of at least 50 certified beds to be considered. The nursing home had to achieve a threshold score for performance data and nursing homes that are included in the Specialty Focus Facility (SFF) program were not considered.

Data collection

From June to July 2024, thousands of medical professionals (registered nurses, nursing home managers and administrators, licensed practical nurses / licensed vocational nurses, nursing assistants, therapists and physicians) were invited to an online survey. Participants were asked to recommend the leading nursing homes from their respective state and in one of the other 25 US states included in the survey by considering the quality of care, accomodation & service and overall nurse staffing. The quality scale ranged from 1 (“Poor”) to 10 (“Excellent”). A score was assigned to each facility based on the weighted average of these ratings and the number of recommendations.

Evaluation

The evaluation of nursing homes utilized a comprehensive scoring model comprising four pillars: Performance Data Score (52%), Reputation Score (33%), Accreditation Score (10%), and Resident Satisfaction Score (5%).
Group 1161

Scoring

The Performance Data Score considered the following three domains: Staffing (40%), Quality Measures (36%) and Inspections (24%). Only nursing homes with a CMS star rating of at least 2 stars were considered.
The Reputation Score was calculated based on the medical professionals’ recommendations (80%) and an assessment of quality dimensions (20%).
The Accreditation Score incorporated data from the Joint Commission (TJC) and reflects a range of structural and/or quality requirement which are relevant to the nursing homes ranking (60%). Additionally the two specialty programs Aging Services and Medical Rehabilitation from the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation
Facilities (CARF) werde included. Each specialty program accounts for 20% to the accreditation score.
The Google Reviews were incorporated as a measure of resident satisfaction (5%).
