Statista PROMs implementation survey

To account for the increasing importance of value-based care in healthcare systems worldwide, Statista is surveying hospitals regarding their Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) implementation status. PROMs are defined as standardized, validated questionnaires completed by patients to measure their perception of their functional well-being and quality of life related to an episode or experience of care.

Newsweek and Statista recognize the importance of this topic for global advancements in healthcare delivery and, together with the guidance of Statista’s global board of medical experts, have developed a survey about the implementation and use of PROMs across different specialties and departments in hospitals. The implementation of PROMs adds a patient-outcome focused dimension and improves the comprehensiveness of the rankings.

The current survey period for the PROMs implementation survey is open from September 18, 2024 to November 15, 2024. You can view the survey here. The responses from the survey will be taken into account for all hospital rankings in 2025.

Project Details

About the project

The ranking for America’s Best Physical Rehabilitation Centers 2024 is based on a nationwide online survey of medical professionals working in rehabilitation centers. The survey was available to participate on Newsweek.com and participants were invited via e-mail. Rehabilitation specific performance indicators
published the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) were analyzed. Additionally, accreditation data provided by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) and the Model Systems Knowledge Translation Center (MSKTC) as well as google reviews as a proxy for patient satisfaction were taken into account.

How we work

Concept

Four data sources were evaluated to identify leading physical rehabilitation centers. Statista R conducted a national online survey of medical professionals to collect recommendations of the best physical rehabilitation centers in the US. Furthermore, quality metrics data published by CMS and accreditation data on physical rehabilitation centers provided by CARF and MSKTC were included in the scoring analysis. Google reviews were included in the scoring model as a proxy of patient satisfaction.

The physical rehabilitation centers were identified according to the definition of Inpatient Rehabilitation Facilities (IRFs) by CMS. IRFs are free standing rehabilitation hospitals and rehabilitation units in acute care hospitals.

Data collection

From April to May 2024, Statista conducted a nationwide online survey among medical professionals (e.g., physicians, therapists, nurses) and managers/administrators who work in physical rehabilitation centers. Participants were asked to recommend notable physical rehabilitation centers in their respective state or region. Recommendations for own employer were not allowed.

For each recommended physical rehabilitation center, participants were asked to rate the four quality dimensions on a scale from 1 (“Poor”) to 10 (“Excellent”): Quality of care, Quality of follow-up care, Quality of service and Accommodation & amenities. A quality score was assigned to each facility based on the weighted average of these dimensions.

Group 1157

Evaluation

The evaluation of physical rehabilitation centers was based on a scoring model including four pillars: the quality metrics score (50%), the reputation score (35%), the accreditation score (10%) and google reviews (5%). The quality metrics score is based on the weighted sub-scores of sixteen quality metrics published by CMS. The reputation score was calculated based on recommendations from medical professionals (80%) and quality dimensions (20%). The accreditation score incorporated available accreditations on physical rehabilitation centers provided by CARF and MSKTC.
