Statista PROMs implementation survey

To account for the increasing importance of value-based care in healthcare systems worldwide, Statista is surveying hospitals regarding their Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) implementation status. PROMs are defined as standardized, validated questionnaires completed by patients to measure their perception of their functional well-being and quality of life related to an episode or experience of care.

Newsweek and Statista recognize the importance of this topic for global advancements in healthcare delivery and, together with the guidance of Statista’s global board of medical experts, have developed a survey about the implementation and use of PROMs across different specialties and departments in hospitals. The implementation of PROMs adds a patient-outcome focused dimension and improves the comprehensiveness of the rankings.

The upcoming survey period for the PROMs implementation survey will begin in autumn 2025 and will be open for participation here.

Project Details

About the project

The first edition of Asia’s Top Private Hospitals awards the leading private hospitals across Asia for excellence in select procedures within the specialties of orthopedics and ophthalmology. The ranking is based on three data sources: an international online survey among peers, accreditation data, and the Statista PROMs Implementation Survey (for orthopedic procedures only).

The ranking features a focused list for each of three select orthopedic procedures (knee surgery and knee replacement, hip surgery and hip replacement, shoulder surgery) and two select ophthalmology procedures (refractive eye surgery and cataract surgery). The orthopedic lists contain 90 hospitals each, and the ophthalmology lists contain 80 hospitals. The top 35 hospitals for the orthopedic procedures and the top 30 hospitals for the ophthalmology procedures are ranked in order, with the remainder listed alphabetically.

The lists include facilities from India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand.

Scoring

For the scoring analysis, three data sources were evaluated to identify leading private hospitals in Asia.

The first source was an international online survey conducted by Statista R, which asked healthcare professionals in Asia with expertise in orthopedics and/or ophthalmology to recommend and assess hospitals.

The second source included data from leading accreditation bodies, including JCI (Joint Commission International), JCT (Joint Commission of Taiwan), NABH (National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers), KOIHA (Korea Institute for Healthcare Accreditation), MHLW (Japan Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare), and MSQH (Malaysian Society for Quality in Health).

The third source was a survey on Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs), which assessed the implementation status of PROMs in hospitals (for orthopedic procedures only).

Data collection

Between September and October 2024, Statista and Newsweek invited healthcare professionals with expertise in orthopedics and/or ophthalmology—including doctors, hospital administrators, and other medical experts—to participate in an online survey. Participants were asked to recommend and assess hospitals, in their own country as well as in other Asian countries, that provide top-quality care for select surgeries within the specialties of orthopedics and ophthalmology. Recommendations for their own employer/hospital were not allowed.

Evaluation

National and international recommendations and assessments were analyzed for each procedure, with greater weight assigned to national recommendations. Additionally, the professional experience of each participant was considered, and a reputation score was calculated for each hospital based on the number of weighted recommendations received. The evaluation of hospitals was conducted using a scoring model tailored to each specialty. For orthopedic procedures, the model comprised three pillars: hospital recommendations from peers (90%), accreditation data (6.5%), and a PROMs implementation score (3.5%). For ophthalmology procedures, the evaluation relied on two pillars: hospital recommendations from peers (92.5%) and accreditation data (7.5%).
