Statista PROMs implementation survey

To account for the increasing importance of value-based care in healthcare systems worldwide, Statista is surveying hospitals regarding their Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) implementation status. PROMs are defined as standardized, validated questionnaires completed by patients to measure their perception of their functional well-being and quality of life related to an episode or experience of care.

Newsweek and Statista recognize the importance of this topic for global advancements in healthcare delivery and, together with the guidance of Statista’s global board of medical experts, have developed a survey about the implementation and use of PROMs across different specialties and departments in hospitals. The implementation of PROMs adds a patient-outcome focused dimension and improves the comprehensiveness of the rankings.

The upcoming survey period for the PROMs implementation survey will begin in autumn 2025 and will be open for participation here.

Project Details

About the project

The first edition of Latin America’s Top Private Hospitals awards the leading private hospitals across Latin America for excellence in select procedures within the specialties of orthopedics and ophthalmology. The ranking is based on three data sources: an international online survey among peers, accreditation data, and the Statista PROMs Implementation Survey (for orthopedic procedures only).

The ranking features a focused list for each of three select orthopedic procedures (knee surgery and knee replacement, hip surgery and hip replacement, shoulder surgery) and two select ophthalmology procedures (refractive eye surgery and cataract surgery). The orthopedic lists award 75 hospitals each, and the ophthalmology lists award 50 hospitals. The top 35 hospitals for the orthopedic procedures and the top 30 hospitals for the ophthalmology procedures are ranked in order, with the remainder listed alphabetically.

The lists include facilities from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico, Panama, and Peru.

How we work

Group 1161

Scoring

The scoring model is based on three pillars: Primary and secondary hospital recommendations from medical experts, accreditations and certifications, and the voluntary PROMs implementation survey.

Group 1162

Concept

The scoring is based on 3 pillars to increase the comprehensiveness of the ranking. Participants were asked to recommend hospitals based on their expertise in one primary medical field (e.g. Cardiology for Cardiologists) and were able to choose an optional secondary area of expertise in which they are also knowledgeable (e.g. due to frequent cooperation with other medical fields).

Participants had the opportunity to name a standout specialty for the list of pediatrics. The categories were: Cardiology, Cardiac Surgery, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Oncology, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Neonatology, Oncology, Orthopedics and Urology.

Group 1160

Data collection

Medical experts were invited by Statista and Newsweek to participate in an online survey to recommend hospitals on a national and international level. Recommendations for own employer were not allowed.

Data on hospital quality metrics and patient experience from publicly available sources was evaluated as well (pending data availability by country). Additionally, the PROMs implementation survey was conducted by Statista to assess the PROMs implementation status of hospitals.

Group 1157

Evaluation

For the evaluation, Statista R applies a scoring model. The scores were calculated for each hospital in each of the 3 pillars and weighted as follows: Recommendations from medical experts (92.5%), Accreditations/Certifications (5%), PROMs implementation (2.5%).
