About the project

The ranking for America’s Best Ophthalmologists 2023 is based on three data sources. During the survey period, medical experts (ophthalmologists, optometrists, clinic managers and healthcare professionals) were invited to an online survey via Newsweek.com to name the leading ophthalmologists. Ophthalmologists from the 20 US states with the highest population were included in the survey.

For their in-state recommendations, participants were asked to asses the quality of care (e.g treatments, preventive care, use of most recent equipment) for each ophthalmologist. Additionally, ophthalmologists received 5% towards their total score if they are certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. Participants were also able to specify a standout treatment (Cornea, Retina and Glaucoma) for the recommended ophthalmologist.
