About the project
The “Canada’s Best Law Firms 2024” lists are based on recommendations made by lawyers (peer-to-peer survey), in-house lawyers (corporate legal departments) and legal experts in 31 different fields of law.
The sample of lawyers was collected via research conducted by Statista on company websites and further public available sources. Invitations were sent by e-mail with a personalised link that could only be used once. In addition, lawyers and clients could participate in the survey via an open link that was announced and made available online on The Globe and Mail’s website. The participants had to provide a personalised company e-mail address for validation purposes, before their answers were included in the evaluation. Prior to the start of the survey, lawyers and legal experts had the opportunity to register on a registration page to receive a personalized survey link to the survey via email at the start of the survey.
For every field of law the total amount of recommendations was analyzed. Based on the results the country’s 200 best law firms were identified and rewarded for different fields of law. The websites and office locations in Canada of these law firms have been additionally researched and recorded. In total 200 law firms have received 642 awards. The top lists of the law firms were created in an elaborate process – this does not imply a quality assessment with any claim to objectivity or completeness.
The survey was conducted online between 16th May and 11th July 2023, and more than 3,100 legal experts (professional clients and colleagues) took part. Statista recorded 10,000 recommendations for law firms in all fields of law. Self-recommendations (recommendations from one’s own, associated or allied law firm) were prohibited and were therefore not included in the evaluation. The participants were also asked to answer some optional editorial questions that were specifically aimed to give a better insight into Canada’s legal world. These questions varied between lawyers and in-house lawyers/clients.
